I said the book would be available for sale on Valentine’s Day. I set myself that deadline because I’m a perfectionist and a procrastinator, but eat your hearts out, haters. My book exists.

Here’s a little excerpt to commemorate a holiday where it’s traditional to eat heart shaped things:

Climbing over the twisted corpses, Kaveh crouched over Berman’s remains. A stampede of legs passed him by. He ignored the head as he’d seen so many zombies do. Instead, he jammed his fist into the man’s chest, felt his way between the ribs and ripped out his heart.

He took a bite. It was the first heart he’d eaten, and he was surprised how much he liked it. Blood poured down his sleeve as he squeezed more of it into his mouth.

Bullets came down like rain through the zombie next to him.

The other zombie, a man in a suit like him, ate calmly until one of those bullets went through his head. He fell quietly forward over Berman’s body, dropping a half-eaten calf.

Kaveh reached for the drumstick and noticed he’d been shot in the chest, but there was no pain. He finished eating what was in his hand and stood up, licking the blood off his fingers.

Eating hearts this Valentine’s Day? Pair it with a side of brains. I’m releasing a new edition of my comedy novel about the zombie apocalypse, under a new title: The Brain Ingredient.

It tells the story of Kaveh, the chef turned zombie who gets brains enough to realize what he is, so he has to decide if he likes it. It’s also the story of Lisa, who thinks she’s prepared for a world where zombies exist, but with everything turning to chaos around her, she realizes she has no clue what “survival” means without everything that defined her life up to that point. There’s courage and carnage, romance and brain eating. What more could you want?

How about a printed copy?

I’m releasing the book for the first time in a real, physical real, printed form. I committed to the digital thing pretty hard, but it’s time to take this story out of cyberspace.

Hello, World

It’s a new year, and I’m setting up a new website. I’ve never had a blog that wasn’t built around a story or written from the perspective of a fictional character, but this seems like as good a time as any to change that.

I’m preparing a new edition of Night of the Loving Dead, including a physical printed version. Part of the idea of doing the story the way I did was to experiment and try to tell a story in a new and engaging way, including embedded videos between chapters and whatnot, but it’s also important for me to get the story out in whatever formats I can, and another part of experimentation is to try everything and see what works, so here we go.
