Alli started tagging buildings when she was 14, but she got serious about it after high school and spent most of the next decade hanging out with artists older, bigger and tougher than her, partly for inspiration, partly for protection. She painted over and got painted over for a long time, but eventually, she got a bit of a reputation.
We met in 2008 at a house party before she got too drunk to remember where she lived. She became my groupie, and I became her lookout. We fought a lot but made up a lot harder. It was a game, a constant challenge, and as long as the band was going, we were always too evenly matched for one to take the other down completely.
It was the band that inspired her to find new venues. She landed stuff in galleries, then sold some pieces direct. She started building a little freelancing business, paying for a room in a flat in the lower Haight.
What else can I say about little Alli Cat? She loves loading docks and flickering fluorescents. She's allergic to actual cats. Her short hair, which matches the color of her blue eyes, is part of her signature now, but I remember times she would get distracted for too long, and the person underneath would grow through, until it exposed some of the shy misfit little blonde girl she hid from everyone but me.
