"Lanning" has the personal hygiene of an astronaut -- nothing matters but the mission. Though he's maybe 40, his ragged hair and beard are turning gray, and the heavy bags under his eyes would look more appropriate on a 60-year-old. I suspect a hard life led him to this point.

He surrounds himself with all this technology he can get, not caring if it works or if he has any time to use it. He's got a fern in his office and plays video games on company time, just out of range of the camera that watches his every other move.
